Strawberries

Wild strawberries – fragaria vesca – woodland strawberry – fraisier des bois naturally growing

The white flowers of the wild strawberry plant produce small flavourful red berries from May until September.

Fragaria is a flowering plant in the rose family. Wild strawberries grow naturally in the garden, they spread with creeping runners that produce new root crowns at each node that can be directed to stay contained in a border. Wild or wood strawberries have a round shape, whereas wild alpine strawberries bear a slightly larger more elongated berry.

Mock strawberries or false strawberries have yellow flowers and produce a red fruit with no flavour, only white flowers grow into a tasty strawberry. true strawberries dangle on the stem, mock look straight up.

The delicate berry is best enjoyed when not bitten but gently squeezed against the mouth pallet with the tongue.
