myrtle – Periwinkle

periwinkle purple flower

Myrtle, vinca minor or periwinkle is a ground covering evergreen with glossy leaves and purple flowers in April-May. In European folklore, myrtle is also known as the « flower of death » because it was customary to lay Periwinkle wreath’s on the graves of dead babies.

Although used in chemotherapy to treat humans and animals, vinblastine and vincristine, the alkaloids present in vinca are poisonous if ingested by dogs.

Evil spirits are said to be repulsed by periwinkle.
